Kim Yong-hee, a specialist at OpenRoute, addressed the issue of Olympic coverage, stating, “Universal viewing rights mean that everyone should have access without information restrictions. Ideally, this would require broadcasting all events in all sports. However, even if terrestrial networks mobilize all their affiliated channels, it’s physically challenging due to limitations.”
He continued, “Companies wanting to secure broadcasting rights could use OTT platforms and make various attempts if they have the will and financial resources. But what makes them hesitant to invest is the public perception that sports should be free to watch.”
Kim further explained, “We’re not talking about amateur events here. When national team members and professional athletes compete, the rights to broadcast these games are traded commercially. This is a business concept.” He added, “Regardless of how popular the Olympics may be, what and how to broadcast is ultimately the choice of the business entity holding the rights.”
